Transition Words:


Transitional words are used for a smooth flow of ideas in a writing. Some of the transitional words are: Above all, accordingly, as an example, before, besides, by the way, consequently, either, furthermore, generally, in addition to, in short, lastly, likewise, next, otherwise, regularly, soon, there, thereby, usually.

There is a paragraph in which transition words are used for a smooth flow of ideas in the writing.

Addition: These words show that you're adding more information to your point.

  • and, again, besides, equally important, further, furthermore, moreover, in addition, too, next, lastly, what's more

Example: I enjoy hiking in the mountains. Furthermore, I love the feeling of accomplishment when I reach the summit.

Contrast: These words introduce opposing ideas.

  • however, on the other hand, in contrast, nevertheless, nonetheless, even so, though, whereas, despite

Example: Saving money is important. However, there are times when unexpected expenses arise.

Cause and Effect: These words show a cause-and-effect relationship between ideas.

  • because, since, as a result, therefore, thus, consequently, so, hence

Example: The traffic was heavy. Therefore, I arrived late for work.

Examples: These words introduce specific examples to illustrate a point.

  • for example, for instance, to illustrate, specifically, in particular, namely, such as

Example: Many people enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking, biking, and camping.

Sequence: These words show the order in which things happen.

  • first, second, third, next, then, finally, later, before, after, meanwhile

Example: First, I chopped the vegetables. Next, I browned the meat. Finally, I added the sauce and simmered everything together.
